This article is about a very particular word: “PASSION”

February 5, 2009, 4:11 am
Dear Reader
Let me first begin by apologizing for getting you all nervous about me quitting BJJ. As you probably all know BJJ is one of my passions. It is a beautiful art that teaches youo much about life. Almost all aspect of life can be simplified if you apply training philosophies from jiu-jitsu. Anyways let me reassure you that the subject of this article is a big fat white lie. But why would I lie???
Well it is because I will consider this one of the most important articles I have ever written and I wanted to get this message across to you by all means necessary.
This article is about a very particular word: “PASSION”
First let me begin writing because I know a lot of people that struggle with motivation. At least that is how they diagnosed themselves. Here is one scenarios I am particular familiar with from listening to jiu-jitsu students over the last 3 years:
- I work 10,12,14,16 hours a day, with an annoying boss, with little pay, with little time off, and when I get home I am just unmotivated to do anything.
Before moving on to others scenarios let me tell you that the above picture may not necessarily be you in all the details, but I think everyone can relate a little to thos situation. I know at one point I experienced this “lifestyle”. To be exact it happened 3 times in my life, or should I say while I got my frist 3 full time jobs out of college. I also want you to realize that sometimes the scenario above can change by changing a variable. Example:
- -I love my job, but it pays nothing.
- -I love my job, but it requires to many hours.
- -I hate my job, but the pay is too good to leave.
The good news is that these and many other scenarios are truly fixable but first we must understand that 3 hours of crappy work is worst for the motivation than 20 hours of gratifying work. The reason I can work so much for Third Martial Arts Academy in Naples, FL is because I am truly invested into jiu-jitus and our team. Have me work a a corporate work for 60,000 dollars a year and you will see me become completely depressive. I wouldn’t work more than 10 hours because I WOULD HATE MY JOB!]
But then your find out that a position is opening and this means better pay, so you get all excited to get a 10 % raise. So now instead of 60,000 your salary is 66,000, but now the responsabilities grew and guess what you still don’t necessarily love your work. Your lifestyle also goes up with the little extra money you made an we are back at stage one.You start getting overweight, older, and that’s it, your life past you before your eyes while you where sitting at a corporate desk.
(Note: Some people are completely in love with being the CEO, or a certain position in the company, and they are satisfied, happy, gratified, and passionate about their jobs and that is wonderful. Nevertheless what is good for one person can be hell for another.)
So what am I getting with this… It is hard to be passionate when you are in the situation like this or similar, but also very simple to overnight start becoming passionate about everything!
Some people have argued with me that “passion” is in the genes.

Some people have argued with me that “passion” is in the genes. That the reason I sleep so little from a day to day is because I have some DNA that allows me to stay awake while thinking clear, which others don’t have. Yes, people have told me that “Human Will” and “Human Drive” is mainly genetic. I guess when you really look at it , it becomes the same old argument: “Nature vs. Nurture.”
Nature/DNA can affect many things and give you a competitive advantage or disadvantage and so does Nurture/Societies or Groups you interact with. But if you listen to this message you really have no longer an excuse to not be passionate. Here is the “How To Become Passionate About Everything Overnight ” - Success Tip of the Century:
Have goals that are bigger than you and life. Shoot for the stars.
Ok so no I have to repeat this because someone reading might make the excuse or argument that I have been bombarded with this secret piece of information and that is why I listened to it and followed it. So here you go:
LISTEN CAREFULLY:
Have goals that are bigger than you and life. Shoot for the stars.
Have goals that are bigger than you and life. Shoot for the stars.
Have goals that are bigger than you and life. Shoot for the stars.
Have goals that are bigger than you and life. Shoot for the stars.
Have goals that are bigger than you and life. Shoot for the stars.
Have goals that are bigger than you and life. Shoot for the stars.
Have goals that are bigger than you and life. Shoot for the stars.
Got It?
Have goals that are bigger than you and life. Shoot for the stars.
One More Time?
Have goals that are bigger than you and life. Shoot for the stars.
Listen, these goals can’t be own a big boat , or a Ferrari, or a even a house. They have to have some emotion behind it. Here are examples of goals bigger than life:
- Single mom’s dream is to send her child to a top private university even though she can’t afford it unless she works 3 jobs, or 120 hours a week.
- Orphan older brother helps raise his two younger sisters and goes back to college and gets a PHD in Mathematics because this was his father’s dying wish.
- A young kid was made fun of because he walked with his leg pointing out. His peer students harassed him so much about it that it left a permanent impact of him. To overcome it he decided to become an Olympic Gold Medalist in the 100 meters sprint.
I am making this up to give you some examples. You probably have seen a million more examples in the movies, like “Cinderella Man” where boxer fights for the family, or “Gladiator” where the main character survives also for his family.
The truth is you can be living an epic movie in your real life. All you need is some creativity, a goal bigger than life that you write down on paper and revisit it every day.
Until next time,

Traveling the World: Paris, France

Roberto Torralbas at "Musée du Louvre"
In one more edition of the GoGetterLifestyle.com “Traveling The World Series” I decided to make a quick change of plans and visit Paris, France. To get there we took the Eurostar train from London, to Paris which is about a 3 hour ride.
Paris , France is a beautiful city. The first thing I did is to stop at a “cafe” ( coffee shop) and try their breakfast. I quickly realized I can live happy ever after just eating crepes for the rest of my life.
Once We arrived at Paris we too the subway to Musée du Louvre. Taking the subway was pretty cool because we had to figure out the maps even though we didn’t know any French. Musée du Louvre was crazy huge, we probably walked like 5 miles in there. I have some great photos, I will be publishing later.
Among all of the attractions that we saw the Eiffel Tower was one of the most impressive. We went all the way up and you can get a magnificent “map like view” of the entire city.
Another great thing to see at well is the Arc de Triomphe.

“Team Lloyd Irvin getting some good Portuguese Food”
There was one thing that definitely impressed me about Lisbon. Great food and great desserts. The main reason for travelling to Lisbon, Portugal was to compete at the IBJJF Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu European Championships.

Nevertheless I really enjoyed their pastry and food. I spent sometime speaking to taxi drivers about the economy and their government which it was quite fascinating as it is so different from the United States of America. Lisbon, Portugal really helped me get a much better idea of Europe because it was very different from London, England and the next day I visited Paris, France which it was really a great experience. I’ll tell you all about it in my next post. In the meantime let me show you some of the food I had.

Traveling The World: London, England

Hello everyone.
I have decided that I love traveling. It feels very liberating. I love FREEDOM. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I was born in a country where freedom ( Havana, Cuba) is non-existent that has made me so desperate for it and aware of its magic. Anyways I started on my list of countries that I want to visit in my lifetime, and I started this category “Traveling The World” just to document it all.
Before I go to describe my visit to London , England on January 27th, 2010 I want everyone back in the USA to hear the following. So far and I know that it hasn’t been long and that I only have visited 2 countries ( second one being Portugal, Lisbon) I felt the following way:
“WE LIVE IN THE BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD…THE USA” ( I can elaborate on this on another day)
The other inner observation I had is that if you are currently living in a place you are not comfortable in … find out ASAP what you need to do to move to a place you want to settle in and start forming the best life ever dreamed there. The reason I made this observation is because I also realized I really love my life in Naples, FL. No matter how much you travel you will spend most of your life in the place of the world you call home “so it better be a great place to live.”
London.
London is a really great place. I love seen all the houses like from the movie “Harry Potter”. I like the accent too…it really reminds you that you are away from home. I had some one call me “mate” and I don’t know why it has a nice effect on my visit.
London was my first trip out of the country in 15 years since I left Cuba when I was 10 years old. Learning how to get around in the city using the subway “Underground” and exchanging dollars for pounds was also interesting.
We walked around downtown, ate at a couple of restaurants. I had a latte that was ridiculously good ( I am a coffee head by the way
) and then we went to Savile Row to get my first business suit tailored with Andrew Ramroop at the Maurice Sedwell Tailor Shop. Andrew was a really nice guy and a true professional.
Tailors are very much like any other artist. It was very easy for me to relate to how passionate him and his assitant where both about cloth, cloth combination and the whole art. I have to stop back on Tuesday February 2, 2010 for a second fitting and then in May I have to see him when he makes his yearly visist to the United States to meet with his clients for a 3rd and fourth fitting. It takes 120 hours for Andrew to make you your first bespoke suit. The suit fits exactly to your body type. It is truly a work of art and they keep a chart of your body so that you can order more suits with less fittings. I plan to buy one per year from now on, but who knows this may change as I really liked Andrew.
One last thing about London. It was really COLD!
I know some of you may have witched I went to many other places to see in London, but I was really satisfied with my visit. My goal is to feel very comfortable traveling to all this places sothat if feels as normal as going from Naples, to Miami right now.
Next time I will tell you about my stay in Lisbon, Portugal.
Sincerely,
Roberto Torralbas
Today I want to talk to you about a realization I had about 4 years ago when I got my first job right out of college. Eaton Corporation a large manufacturing company ( kind of like 3M or General Electric) was looking for to IT graduates from top universities and I was happy to find them…All jobs before Eaton had been less than 10 dollars an hour…and now I was a 21 Year OLD making over $60, ooo a year. HALLELUYA!!!
Finally I could take a date to a restaurant and not worry about price or being able to cover it. Finally be able to safe money and not worry about what would happen to my mother if her car broke down. So many worries now finally gone. I had finally transitioned from POOR to MIDDLE CLASS.
To make a long story short here is what I found at the corporate world:
- Unhealthy Lifestyle: I actually did an experiment and went around asking people if they ever did sports in college and found out that even High Level Wrestlers at one point had giving in to the daily routine of the corporate world and its bad diets. This was one of the factors contributing to my departure from this world as I love training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and I saw a conflict of priorities
- Lots and Lots sucking up: Yes
- Bosses taking credit for your work on a daily basis and not even saying thanks or admitting that this was what they were doing.
- Insult to Intelligence: Yes I will never foget how they sold in the HR department at “Eaton Corp we encourage a lifetime of learning”, “Loyalty”, “BLAH”, “BLAH”, “BLAH” and I saw managers being let go left and right…
- Success is not determine by hard work: In the corporate world is all about networking, that means going to bars with the bosses and not missing any parties thrown by coworkers.
- Meetings, Meetings, Meetings: To get anything done , ten idiots, who are not experts in the subject discussed must seat around a table because no one has the marbles to become accountable for it. But even when you want to be held accountable this is frown upon because you make everyone else look bad…yeah even the boss
- Yeah the list goes on and on….
I was lucky to realize that:
- My Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu dreams would had been over...if I kept working at this place
- I would be locked into living in a cold small town where land is so cheap that this company can build their huge needed factories. Yeah after 6 Months they wanted to send me to Milwaukee ( no offense , but I am Cuban and below 70 Degrees is considered freezing for me)
- It will had force eventually for me and my current fiance of 4 years to brake up
- The longer I waited to quit the harder it would be because I would had been making more money then.
I personally know that for a person to be happy they need 4 things:
- A place they like and can settle and enjoy ( I needed to be near the oceans in hot temperature rather)
- Their significant other ( My fiance, Katy lived in Naples)
- A career they love ( Decided that I would take a pay cut to be able to achieve 2 out of 4 of this item and later on … start my own martial arts school)
- Wealth ( At 21 didn’t seem super important, but now it does…I don’t mean fancy cars and luxurious home, or lots and lots of money, but more than anything freedom of mind, and peace, not being able to be stuck and worrying about a large mortgage or car payments, and being able to do everything you want to do…Obviously money can help a lot with those concerns
So I took a $30,000 dollar paycut and moved to Naples and haven’t look back ever since.
Now at 25 I am a homeowner, a business owner, about to getting married to my college sweetheart fo 4 years, a high level athlete in the sport I love and learning how to achieve wealth more and more everyday.
When I say the “Price of Dreams…” for me it was $30,000. That’s the pay cut I had to take to be able to leave that corporate world. Many people just like in the movie “Up In the Air” sacrifice their dreams for a paycheck and security. When in reality any day they can be fired without notice…You see being a business owner is more secure…you control your own outcome, your own economy.
In the Corporate World one person can fire you in the Small Business World multiple people need to fire you …these people are your customers. Which one is more secure?
At one point in your lifetime you will need to work by punching a time card and need to put up with many of the things I mentioned above for a paycheck and a living, but hopefully it has an end in sight. You should work for a living, so that it allows you to concentrate on how to create profits to achieve wealth and a fortune. But never expect wages and punching time cards to earn you a fortune:

p.s I will live you with a great video. Make sure you watch it in its entirety. VERY GOOD ADVICE from one influential individual:
Welcome to Go Getter Lifestyle . Com
Everything started with a conversation about why some people accomplish things and some done. I remember when my instructor Julius Park said to me that you are either a go getter in this lifetime or you are not. This is when this idea started. I decided to take my go getting abilities to the next level, document it, and help others achieve their goals.
I started small…I bought a nice car I liked CA$H ($11,000)
Then I finally was able to become a US Citizen and more importantly be able to pay for my mother US Citizenship as well. Not only that but also pay for all of our passports. We both needed 2 passports due to regulations in Cuba. ($2000)
Now I know this is not much money for a lot of successful people out here, but to me and her it was a lot. We haven’t been to Cuba in 15 years and we left our family behind. We came to this country by ourselves and experience very difficult times. Through all this time my mom raised me by herself, never remarried, or had a man help her, and until this day I have never seen her work less than 80 hours a week.
I have to thank her everyday for the example she led by when I was younger. As you will see many of my goals revolve around being able to send her to Cuba and having her live comfortably. I personally feel she has already done her share. One of my goals for 2010 in my first bucket list is to travel with her to Cuba so that she can see the family we left behind. I know it means a lot to her.
The trip will probably be another $5000 dollars because traveling to Cuba can be expensive for three people ( Me, Her and My Fiance)
Anyways before I keep going of track…The point being without a go getter attitude I would had never been able to achieve this goals. I started out small, but now I am about to blow it up.
I hope that this websites serves as inspiration for many to achieve their goals and star living a Go Getter Lifestyle.
